Polo Neck Jumpers
You either love them or hate them, but polo neck jumpers are one of fashions most iconic items and are a staple in many people wardrobes. The polo neck is a roll of fabric that comes up from the jumper and covers the neck and can either be one roll or folded over to give a thicker appearance. The polo neck has always been associated with academics and intellectuals and the French philosopher Michel Foucault made it his trademark. Noel Coward was an English play write, composer and actor and brought the polo neck into Western fashion in the 1920\'s. The middle class loved this new design and feminists turned the garment into unisex attire. In 1933 Marlene Dietrich was photographed in Hollywood wearing a man\'s grey suit with a black polo neck jumper which was a turning point for women\'s fashion.
By the 1950\'s the polo neck jumper and top were part of mainstream fashion and in 1957 Audrey Hepburn was seen wearing one in the film Funny Face. This image of Audrey has become instantly recognisable and has done wonders for the popularity of the polo neck. To recreate this look of Audrey\'s a black polo neck vintage jumper, slim fitting trousers and a pair of flat pumps are all you need. Pull your hair back into a slouchy ponytail and add some vintage make up to bring the look alive. The polo neck thrived in the 60\'s and 70\'s and the T.V show Charlie\'s Angels made them sexy in white. Other 70\'s T.V shows that sported the garment were Three\'s Company, Starsky & Hutch and Six Million Dollar Man. Polo necks in the 70\'s were now more popular with men than they were with women in previous decades, and a classic look from this era was the jumper worn with a tweed suit. Men today can easily get this look buy matching a classic jumper with a vintage jacket and mixing it up a little by wearing with dark coloured jeans which will modernize the look.
Many styles were adopted through the 80\'s and 90\'s including different colours, different thickness of knit, sleeveless, cut out shoulders and cropped. The necklines of the jumpers got bigger and baggier in the 80\'s and 90\'s and made the polo neck into a bit of a fashion faux pas. The gaudy prints and abundance of accessories put people off when we started to move into the 2000\'s and they have stayed out of fashion for a long time. However, Shailene Woodley, Stacey Keibler and Tali Lennox have all been seen wearing the different variations of the polo throughout this year and if Kate Moss can wear one, so can we!
